原作は、ナチス監視下のアメリカ軍捕虜収容所を舞台にしたブロードウェイのヒット劇。皆の協力のもと、脱走を試みた2人の捕虜が射殺される。仲間内から裏切り者がいるとの声が上がり、一匹狼のセフトンは真っ先に疑いの目を向けられる。なんとか疑惑を晴らそうと、ドイツ軍のスパイ探しをするセフトンだったが……。主演のウィリアム・ホールデンは、今作でオスカー俳優の仲間入りを果たし、その後も目覚ましい活躍を遂げる。しかし、1981年不慮の事故でこの世を去った悲劇の俳優である。

Based on a hit Broadway play set in a Nazi-guarded American POW camp. With everyone's cooperation, two prisoners attempting to escape are shot dead. Suspicions arise among the group that there is a traitor, and the lone wolf Sefton is immediately eyed with distrust. Sefton tries to clear his name by searching for the German spy... Lead actor William Holden joined the ranks of Oscar-winning actors with this film and went on to achieve remarkable success. However, he tragically died in an accident in 1981.
