A rare action thriller from Billy Wilder, depicting British soldiers fighting to survive. After the British army suffers defeat at the hands of Rommel's German forces, Corporal Bramble, who escaped death, disguises himself as a hotel waiter who died the previous day and attempts to make contact with German soldiers. Fortunately, the deceased waiter was a German spy, allowing him to leak classified information to the Allies. Erich von Stroheim, a director Wilder had long admired, appears in the role of a general.
