A documentary that delves into the truth behind the 1980s San Francisco Bay Area scene, the epicenter of thrash metal—a subgenre of heavy metal that stands out for its extreme intensity and speed and that also achieved commercial success. In the early 1980s, San Francisco was mired in recession. Working-class boys were stunned by a new musical wave they obtained from England through tape trading. Driven by the urge to go "faster, harder," they thrashed their guitars and gathered nightly with friends, chasing the possibilities of a music they had yet to hear. These boys, far removed from glamour, eventually created a new music—thrash metal—and in just a few years redrew the map of the heavy metal world. The film features a parade of bands that represent the genre, including the "Big Four" of thrash metal—METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER, and ANTHRAX, all hugely famous in Japan—as well as EXODUS, one of the scene's most essential bands, and TESTAMENT, POSSESSED, DEATH ANGEL, and others. Now global stars, they recount a wealth of treasured anecdotes, interwoven with rare footage from the era, looking back on the dense few years of the early Bay Area thrash scene.
