映画の都ハリウッドのサイレント時代と50年代、2つの時代がシンクロする作品。「ハリウッドでハリウッドを描く作品が作りたかった」とビリー・ワイルダーは製作意図を語っている。売れない脚本家ギリスは、無声映画時代の大女優ノーマの家へ迷い込む。華やかな世界への返り咲きを願う彼女は、ギーリに脚本の手直しを頼むが……。ノーマ役のグロリア・スワンソンの緊迫感あふれる演技は秀逸。「クレオパトラ」などの監督として知られるセシル・B・デミルが、本人役で登場している。

A film that synchronizes two eras: the silent era of Hollywood, the movie capital, and the 1950s. Billy Wilder stated his intention: 'I wanted to make a film about Hollywood, set in Hollywood.' Unsuccessful screenwriter Gillis stumbles into the home of Norma, a great silent film star. She longs for a comeback to the glamorous world and asks Gillis to polish her script, but... Gloria Swanson's tense performance as Norma is superb. Cecil B. DeMille, known for directing 'Cleopatra' and others, appears as himself.
