ソ連出身の名匠アンドレイ・タルコフスキーが、ポーランドの作家スタニスワフ・レムの代表作「ソラリスの陽のもとに」を映画化したSF。未知の生命体と接触し、極限状態に置かれた人間の心理を独特の映像表現で描き、1972年・第25回カンヌ国際映画祭で審査員特別賞を受賞した。 海と雲に覆われ、生物の存在が確認されていない惑星ソラリス。科学者たちはその海に理性があると考え、接触を図るが失敗に終わる。宇宙ステーションは謎の混乱に陥り、地球との通信も途絶えてしまう。心理学者クリスが原因究明のため送り込まれるが、友人の物理学者はすでに自殺しており、残る2人の科学者も怯えきっていた。やがてクリスの前に、数年前に自殺した妻が姿を現す。

When communication is lost with the space station Prometheus, which is exploring the ocean-and-cloud-covered planet Solaris, psychologist Kris is sent to investigate. Upon arriving at the Prometheus, Kris witnesses the suicide of a friend, traces of people who shouldn't be there, and a series of inexplicable phenomena caused by the sentient organic ocean.
