In the 11th year of the Showa era (1936). Sadako, a maid at a Japanese inn, becomes infatuated with the inn's master and begins an affair. When the affair is discovered by the man's wife, the two decide to elope. As they indulge in days of pleasure, Sadako becomes unwilling to ever let him go, and eventually strangles him to death to keep him for herself, then cuts off his genitals.
