足を骨折し、車椅子とベッドでの生活を余儀なくされているカメラマンのジェフ。彼は退屈しのぎにと、窓から見える向かいのアパートの人々を眺めるのが日課になっていた。ところがある日、セールスマンの夫と口論をしていた病床の妻がいなくなっていることに気づく。恋人のリザや看護師のステラに協力を依頼し、裏窓を通した調査がはじまる。男が妻を殺したのでは、という数々の状況証拠をつかみ、疑いは確信へと変わっていく…。

After breaking his leg, photographer Jeff is confined to a wheelchair and bed rest. To stave off boredom, he makes a daily habit of watching the residents of the apartment building across the way through his window. One day, however, he notices that the bedridden wife who had been arguing with her salesman husband has disappeared. Enlisting the help of his girlfriend Lisa and his nurse Stella, he begins his investigation through the rear window. Piece by piece, he gathers circumstantial evidence suggesting the man murdered his wife, and his suspicion gradually hardens into certainty…
