A bandwagon film made by Kinji Fukasaku during the Star Wars boom. Though the story is simplistic, borrowing from the Tale of the Eight Dog Warriors, it generated buzz with the casting of Vic Morrow and the construction of a full-scale replica of the Riave ship. While the special effects fall short compared to Star Wars, the chase scenes created without compositing were highly praised overseas. The planet Jirusia in the Andromeda Galaxy has been transformed into a "Planet Fortress" by the invading Gabanas Empire, led by Emperor Roxeia XII. Jirusia's Great Chief Kido seeks a hero of miraculous salvation, releasing eight "Sacred Riave Fruits" into space and instructing his granddaughter Emeralida and two warriors, Urokko, to pursue the fruits and retrieve the hero. However, Roxeia launches pursuit warships without delay. The Riave fruits reach five individuals on the Earth Federation colony planet Miraseria: Galda, a former general who resigned in disillusionment; Shiro and Aron, young space bikers; Jack, a thug; and Meia, a wealthy heiress. The youths find Emeralida's damaged ship while collecting "Space Fireflies" and rescue her and Urokko, but are bewildered by their mission. Galda returns the fruit and declines to join. Shiro and the others, keeping Meia in the dark, lie about introducing other heroes and sell Emeralida to an old woman seeking a bride for her son. The old woman and Emeralida are later captured by Gabanas pursuit forces. Meia, furious upon learning of their actions, inspires the repentant youths to prepare for Jirusia's rescue. They modify Meia's space boat to carry Shiro and Aron's small craft and head for Jirusia. Along the way, they are joined by Hans, a Gabanas man who holds a Riave fruit and is the rightful heir to the Gabanas throne, usurped by Roxeia. Meanwhile, Gabanas, captivated by Earth's beauty, demands unconditional surrender from the Earth Federation. Amid the chaos, Shiro and his six companions, now reunited with Galda, infiltrate the Gabanas fortress to destroy the planet fortress and rescue Emeralida. Gathering the remaining two allies, the eight confront Roxeia.
