Death by Metal
A documentary focusing on Chuck Schuldiner, known as the "Father of Death Metal," and his band DEATH. Death metal evolved as an aberrant offshoot of thrash metal, itself a subgenre of heavy metal, pushing further speed and adding death vocals. Chuck Schuldiner, who led DEATH—formed in Florida in 1983, a band whose name became the name of the genre itself—was, contrary to the aggressive public image of heavy metal pushed to its extreme, surprisingly delicate and sincere about music. In pursuit of his ideal sound, he repeatedly changed members until the band eventually became something like his solo project. His perfectionism was sometimes called ruthless, but it was also the driving force behind his uncompromising musical evolution. The film traces his life from his youth sharing music through tape trading, through the band's formation and numerous lineup changes, and his constant musical evolution, to his eventual battle with illness and death at the young age of 34, depicting through the testimony of those who made music with him how he stayed true to the music he believed in, even when he was sometimes lonely.
