Director Shinya Tsukamoto, known for "Fires on the Plain" and "A Snake of June," directs his first period film, starring Sosuke Ikematsu and Yu Aoi. Set in the late Edo period, when 250 years of peace were shaken by the debate over whether to open the country to the outside world, the story unfolds in a farming village on the outskirts of Edo, following a ronin tossed about by the tides of the era and the people around him, confronting questions of life and death. Ikematsu plays the protagonist ronin—gifted in both letters and martial arts—while Aoi plays a neighboring farmer's daughter. They are joined by Tatsuya Nakamura of "Fires on the Plain" and newcomer Takanari Maeda, selected through an audition. Tsukamoto himself, who also acts in films such as "Silence," appears in the cast. The film was selected for the competition section of the 75th Venice International Film Festival in 2018.
