ジャン＝リュック・ゴダール監督が、冷戦期に東ベルリンに潜伏していた老スパイの西への帰還の旅を、主にドイツに関連した哲学や文学、音楽、映画などを引用しながら描いたドラマ。 ベルリンの壁が崩壊した翌年の1990年のドイツ。西側のスパイとして東ベルリンに30年間潜伏していた諜報員レミー・コーションの前に、軍情報部のゼルテン伯爵が現れる。「すべて終わった」と告げられたレミーは、ゼルテン伯爵に勧められ、西側への帰還を目指して東ドイツを大きく迂回する旅に出る。トーマス・マンの小説の登場人物を思わせる娘シャルロッテや、ドン・キホーテとサンチョ・パンサなど、さまざまな人たちと出会いながら、レミーは西側にたどり着く。 主人公レミー役に、ゴダール監督作「アルファヴィル」でも同名の探偵役を演じたエディ・コンスタンティーヌ。ロベルト・ロッセリーニ監督が「ドイツ零年」でナチスドイツ崩壊の1945年をドイツにとっての「ゼロ年」と示したのに対し、ゴダール監督は東西ドイツが統一された1990年を「新ゼロ年」として本作を手がけた。

The third installment of the "War Trilogy" by Roberto Rossellini—the standard-bearer of Neorealism who profoundly influenced the directors of the New Wave—this drama depicts the cruelty of war through the lives of a young boy and his family in the ruins of post-WWII Berlin. Utilizing Neorealist techniques such as extensive location shooting and the use of non-professional actors, the film portrays the tragedy that befalls the boy with a documentary-like touch. Berlin after the fall of Nazi Germany. Young Edmund lives in a cramped, rented room with his frail, bedridden father; his brother, a former Nazi Party member who hides indoors for fear of the police; and his sister, who supports the household while nursing their father. To earn money in place of his father and brother, Edmund wanders the devastated city instead of attending school. One day, he reunites with Enning, his former primary school teacher. Having been expelled from the school system and now involved in the black market, Enning preaches Nazi ideology, by which the innocent Edmund gradually becomes influenced.
