高畑勲監督が東映動画時代の1968年に手がけた長編デビュー作。深沢一夫による人形劇の戯曲「春楡の上に太陽」を原案に、太陽の剣を託された勇敢な少年ホルスが悪魔に立ち向かう姿を描く。人里離れた自然の中で父と暮らす少年ホルスは、狼の群れに襲われたところを岩男モーグに助けられ、モーグの肩に刺さっていた太陽の剣を譲り受ける。父を亡くしたホルスは遺言に従い、人々が暮らす村を目指して旅に出るが、その途中で恐ろしい悪魔グルンワルドに捕らえられ、崖から突き落とされてしまう。村に流れ着いたホルスは村人たちを悩ませていた大カマスを退治し、一躍村の英雄となる。ある日、廃墟の村で孤独な少女ヒルダと出会ったホルスは、彼女を村に連れて帰るが……。場面設計・美術設計・原画を宮崎駿、作画監督を大塚康生、原画を森康二が担当。1968年夏の「東映まんがパレード（東映まんがまつり）」の1編として公開された。

Director Isao Takahata's feature-length debut, made in 1968 during his time at Toei Animation. Based on the puppet play 'The Sun on the Spring Elm' by Kazuo Fukazawa, it depicts the brave boy Hols, entrusted with the Sun Sword, confronting a demon. Hols lives with his father in a remote natural setting. Rescued from a wolf attack by the rock giant Moog, Hols receives the Sun Sword embedded in Moog's shoulder. After losing his father, Hols follows his father's dying wish and sets out for a village where people live, but is captured by the terrifying demon Grunwald and thrown off a cliff. Washing up in a village, Hols defeats a giant pike that has been plaguing the villagers and becomes a hero. One day, he meets a lonely girl named Hilda in a ruined village and brings her back, but... Scene design, art design, and key animation were handled by Hayao Miyazaki, animation direction by Yasuo Otsuka, and key animation by Koji Mori. It was released as part of the 'Toei Manga Parade' (Toei Manga Festival) in the summer of 1968.
