The African Queen
Master filmmaker John Huston, known for 'The Maltese Falcon,' adapts the classic adventure novel of the same name by British author C.S. Forester. Africa during World War I. Rose, a British woman, is engaged in missionary work with her brother Samuel, a clergyman, but their village is attacked by German forces, and Samuel dies from the shock. Left alone, Rose is rescued by Charlie, who delivers supplies and mail to the village, and boards his ramshackle steamboat, the 'African Queen.' Charlie had planned to take a break from work until the war ended, but is reluctantly persuaded by the vengeful Rose, and the two of them set out to strike back at the Germans. Humphrey Bogart, of 'Casablanca' and 'The Maltese Falcon,' gives a memorable performance as the rough-hewn captain Charlie, a complete departure from his usual hard-boiled image, winning the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 24th Academy Awards in 1952. Katharine Hepburn, of 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner' and 'The Philadelphia Story,' plays Rose. In 1990, the tumultuous behind-the-scenes story of this film's production was itself dramatized in 'White Hunter Black Heart,' directed by and starring Clint Eastwood.
