名匠ガス・バン・サントが1989年に発表した長編第2作。ドラッグに依存しながら刹那的な日々を送る若者たちの姿を描き、監督の名を広く知らしめた初期代表作のひとつ。元薬物依存者でもあるジェームズ・フォーグルの自伝的小説を原作に、ドラッグカルチャーの中で生きる若者たちの虚無感や閉塞感を、ユーモアと哀感を交えながらスタイリッシュに描いた青春ドラマ。 麻薬常習者のボブは、妻のダイアンや相棒のリック、10代の少女ナディーンとともに、新たなドラッグを手に入れるためドラッグストアを荒らしながら、その日暮らしを続けている。犯罪のスリルとドラッグによる高揚感に浸る彼らだったが、ある事故をきっかけに、仲間たちの関係は少しずつ崩れ始めていく。 主人公ボブをマット・ディロン、妻ダイアンをケリー・リンチが演じるほか、ジェームズ・レマー、ヘザー・グラハムらが共演。「裸のランチ」などで知られるビート作家ウィリアム・S・バロウズも出演している。

Depicting young people living fleeting lives while dependent on drugs, it is one of his early representative works that brought him widespread recognition. Based on the autobiographical novel by former drug addict James Fogle, this youth drama stylishly portrays the emptiness and claustrophobia of young people living within drug culture, blending humor with pathos. Bob, a drug addict, lives day to day with his wife Dianne, his partner Rick, and teenage girl Nadine, ransacking pharmacies to obtain new drugs. Immersed in the thrill of crime and the euphoria of drugs, their relationships gradually begin to unravel after a certain accident. Matt Dillon plays protagonist Bob, Kelly Lynch plays his wife Dianne, with James Le Gros and Heather Graham co-starring. Beat writer William S. Burroughs, known for 'Naked Lunch,' also appears.
