A landmark film of the 1960s Czech New Wave, this work portrays the wild antics of two uninhibited girls, both named "Marie," using a boldly experimental array of techniques including color shifts, coloring, optical effects, innovative sound design, and abrupt scene transitions. The older sister, with a blonde bob and a daisy wreath, and the younger sister, with dark brown hair in two pigtails, both call themselves "Marie" and pretend to be siblings. They live freely, tricking men into buying them meals only to fake-cry and run away. At home, they do whatever they please—bathing in milk, burning paper, cutting out magazine photos, slicing up bed sheets, and eventually cutting each other's bodies, until the screen itself fragments. Directed and written by Věra Chytilová, a pioneering Czech filmmaker and the most prominent female director of the Czech New Wave. The two leads were played by non-professional actresses selected through auditions: Jitka Cerhová and Ivana Karbanová. Other roles were also filled by non-actors, such as composers and designers. The film had its first official theatrical release in Japan in 1991 at Kichijoji Baus Theater, where it ran for an extended period through word of mouth. It has since gained a cult following, and in March 2026, a 4K restored version will be re-released to commemorate the 60th anniversary of its production and the 35th anniversary of its Japanese release.
