アメリカ映画界を代表する名匠ガス・バン・サント監督がキャリア初期に手がけ、リバー・フェニックスとキアヌ・リーブスの共演が話題を呼んだ青春ロードムービー。 緊張すると突然意識を失ってしまうナルコレプシーという病を抱えるマイクは、12歳の時に母親に捨てられて故郷のアイダホを離れ、ポートランドの路上で体を売って暮らしている。スコットはポートランド市長の息子として何不自由なく育ったが、見せかけだけの家庭に嫌気が差し、家を飛び出していた。街で出会った2人は、マイクの行方不明の母を探すため、彼の故郷アイダホへ向かうが、やがて2人の道は別れていく。 マイクを演じたリバー・フェニックスが、第48回ベネチア国際映画祭でボルピ杯（最優秀男優賞）を受賞。ウィリアム・シェイクスピアの戯曲「ヘンリー四世　第1部」「ヘンリー四世　第2部」「ヘンリー五世」に着想を得ている。

A youth road movie directed early in the career of Gus Van Sant, one of American cinema's leading masters, and notable for the collaboration of River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves. Mike, who suffers from narcolepsy and suddenly loses consciousness when tense, was abandoned by his mother at age 12 and left his hometown of Idaho to live on the streets of Portland, selling his body. Scott, raised without want as the son of Portland's mayor, grew disgusted with his superficial family and ran away from home. After meeting on the streets, the two head to Mike's hometown of Idaho to search for his missing mother, but eventually their paths diverge. River Phoenix, who played Mike, won the Volpi Cup (Best Actor) at the 48th Venice International Film Festival. The film is inspired by William Shakespeare's plays "Henry IV, Part 1," "Henry IV, Part 2," and "Henry V."
