世界中で広く愛される絵本「ひととまねこざる」（おさるのジョージ）シリーズを生み出したハンス＆マーグレット・レイ夫妻のドキュメンタリー。 ドイツのハンブルグ出身で、パリで暮らしながら児童向けの本を作っていたハンスとマーガレットは、そこで後のベストセラー「ひとまねこざる」の主人公となるキャラクター、おさるのジョージを生み出した。やがて第2次世界大戦が始まり、ユダヤ人である2人は、ナチスドイツの侵攻を受けたパリから自転車で脱出。その時も「ひとまねこざる」の原画を手放さなかった。戦後はニューヨークで執筆活動を続け、ジョージというキャラクターを生涯守り続けた夫妻の波乱万丈の人生を、膨大なアーカイブ映像や貴重な原画などの資料に、手書きのアニメーションも交えて描き出した。 「小学校　それは小さな社会」「甲子園　フィールド・オブ・ドリームス」などで国内外で高い評価を受ける山崎エマが2017年に手がけた長編初監督作。2018年に、新宿シネマカリテの特集企画「カリコレ2018／カリテ・ファンタスティック！シネマコレクション2018」にて劇場公開。2026年には、河合優実のナレーションによる日本語吹き替え版が公開。

A documentary about Hans and Margret Rey, the couple who created the beloved children's book series "Curious George," cherished worldwide. Hans and Margret, originally from Hamburg, Germany, were living in Paris and creating children's books when they invented the character Curious George, who would become the protagonist of their future bestseller. When World War II began, the Jewish couple fled Paris on bicycles to escape the Nazi invasion, carrying the original illustrations for "Curious George" with them. After the war, they continued their writing careers in New York, protecting the character of George for the rest of their lives. The film portrays their tumultuous lives using a wealth of archival footage, precious original artwork, and handwritten animation. This is the feature-length directorial debut of Ema Yamazaki, acclaimed in Japan and abroad for works like "Elementary School: A Small Society" and "Koshien: Field of Dreams," completed in 2017. It was released in theaters in 2018 as part of the Shinjuku Cinema Qualite special program "Caricolle 2018 / Qualite Fantastic! Cinema Collection 2018." A Japanese dubbed version with narration by Yuuimi Kawai is scheduled for release in 2026.
