かいせつ 京都・島原遊郭の老舗置屋“井筒屋”を営む母に、破談で傷つき帰郷した娘は強く反発する…。母と娘の葛藤を軸に、花街で生きるしかない女たちの悲哀を描いた名作。戦前から長く溝口映画を支えた水谷浩の美術も圧巻。

A commentary: A daughter returns to Kyoto's Shimabara pleasure district, wounded after a broken engagement, and strongly resists her mother, who runs the long-established geisha house "Izutsuya." This masterpiece centers on the mother-daughter conflict, portraying the sorrow of women who have no choice but to live in the flower and willow world. The art direction by Hiroshi Mizutani, who long supported Mizoguchi's films from before the war, is also stunning.
