A commentary: In the late Heian period, when warriors rose in place of the aristocracy, Taira no Kiyomori faces various hardships... Mizoguchi depicts the "human" Kiyomori, tormented by the secret of his birth, on an overwhelming scale in this historical drama. A young Raizō, early in his debut, plays the youthful Kiyomori with dashing flair, and the unforgettable performance by Kogure as his sensuous mother lingers in the mind.
