「週刊朝日」連載の吉川英治による同名小説を、大映がシリーズとして映画化。本作に続く第2作を衣笠貞之助、第3作を島耕二が手掛けた。市川雷蔵演じる平清盛の活躍と出生をめぐるドラマが、溝口と大映京都の一流スタッフによって華麗に描かれる。2004年にフィルムセンター（現・国立映画アーカイブ）と角川映画株式会社が共同でデジタル復元した。The first instalment in Daiei’s film series adaptation of Eiji Yoshikawa’s novel of the same title, originally serialized inThe Asahi Weekly. The second instalment was directed by Teinosuke Kinugasa, and the third by Koji Shima. This first film portrays the rise of Taira no Kiyomori, played by Raizo Ichikawa, and the events surrounding his birth, brought to life through the lavish craftsmanship of Mizoguchi and Daiei Kyoto’s finest creative minds. In 2004, the film was digitally restored through a joint project between the National Film Center (now the National Film Archive of Japan) and what was then Kadokawa Pictures.
A commentary: In the late Heian period, when warriors rose in place of the aristocracy, Taira no Kiyomori faces various hardships... Mizoguchi depicts the "human" Kiyomori, tormented by the secret of his birth, on an overwhelming scale in this historical drama. A young Raizō, early in his debut, plays the youthful Kiyomori with dashing flair, and the unforgettable performance by Kogure as his sensuous mother lingers in the mind.
