Osaka Elegy
日活を退社した永田雅一に従って、第一映画に加わった溝口による最初の作品。製薬会社に勤めるアヤ子（山田）は、横領事件を起こした父親のため妾となる。徐々に身を持ち崩し、恋人や身内からも見放されていくまでを冷徹な目線で描く。山田五十鈴が、関西弁の台詞回しで大阪の土着的な気質を醸しつつ、モダンな佇まいによって自立した女性像を体現している。Mizoguchi’s first film for Daiichi Eiga after following producer Masaichi Nagata from Nikkatsu. Ayako (Isuzu Yamada), an employee at a pharmaceutical company, becomes her employer’s mistress in order to support her father who has been accused of embezzlement. Mizoguchi observes with unsparing clarity as her life gradually unravels and she is abandoned by both her lover and her family. Yamada combines the rhythms of her native Kansai dialect with a distinctly local sensibility to portray a strikingly modern, independent heroine.
Synopsis: Ayako (Yamada), a telephone operator, enters into a lover's contract with a married company president to cover her father's debts after he loses his job due to embezzlement suspicions... Considered one of Mizoguchi's masterpieces from before the war, the lively streets of Osaka and Yamada's modern fashion are also highlights.
