Street of Shame
かいせつ 溝口健二の遺作。赤線廃止前夜の東京・吉原の娼館を舞台に、様々な事情を抱えて流れ着いた女たちの哀歓を描いた女性群像。豪華女優陣が演じる飄々とした娼婦たちは妙な雰囲気を醸し出し、本作を唯一無二の赤線ものにしている。
Commentary: Mizoguchi Kenji's final work. Set in a Yoshiwara brothel in Tokyo on the eve of the abolition of the red-light district, this female ensemble piece depicts the joys and sorrows of women who have drifted there with various circumstances. The nonchalant prostitutes, played by a cast of luxurious actresses, exude a peculiar atmosphere, making this film a one-of-a-kind red-light district story.
