「四畳半神話大系」「有頂天家族」などで知られる人気作家・森見登美彦の初期ベストセラー作品で、黒髪の乙女に思いを寄せる冴えない大学生の物語をユーモラスに描いた「夜は短し歩けよ乙女」をアニメーション映画化。監督は、テレビアニメ化された「四畳半神話大系」や「マインド・ゲーム」「ピンポン THE ANIMATION」など独特な表現手法のアニメ作品で人気の湯浅政明。同じく「四畳半神話大系」も手がけた、劇団「ヨーロッパ企画」の上田誠が脚本を担当。シンガーソングライターのほか、ドラマ「逃げるは恥だが役に立つ」などで役者としても人気の星野源が、主人公の声を担当した。所属クラブの後輩である「黒髪の乙女」に恋心を抱く大学生の「先輩」は、「なるべく彼女の目に留まる」ことを目的とした「ナカメ作戦」を実行する日々を送っていた。個性豊かな仲間が巻き起こす珍事件に巻き込まれながら季節はめぐっていくが、黒髪の乙女との関係は外堀を埋めるばかりでなかなか進展せず……。

An animated film adaptation of "The Night is Short, Walk on Girl," an early bestseller by popular author Tomihiko Morimi, known for "The Tatami Galaxy" and "Uchoten Kazoku," which humorously depicts the story of an unremarkable university student who pines for a black-haired maiden. Directed by Masaaki Yuasa, popular for his uniquely expressive animation works including the TV anime "The Tatami Galaxy," "Mind Game," and "Ping Pong The Animation." The screenplay is by Makoto Ueda of the theater troupe Europe Kikaku, who also worked on "The Tatami Galaxy." Singer-songwriter and actor Gen Hoshino, also popular for his role in the drama "We Married as a Job," voices the protagonist. The university student "Senpai," who harbors feelings for "the black-haired maiden," a junior in his club, spends his days executing the "Nakame Strategy" aimed at "getting her to notice him as much as possible." The seasons turn as he gets swept up in strange incidents caused by his colorful friends, but his relationship with the black-haired maiden only progresses around the edges without making real headway...
