刑事ジョン・ファーガソンは、逃走する犯人を追撃中に屋根から落ちそうになる。そんな自分を助けようとした同僚が誤って転落死してしまったことにショックを受けたジョンは、高いところに立つとめまいに襲われる高所恐怖症になってしまう。そのことが原因で警察を辞めたジョンの前に、ある日、旧友のエルスターが現れる。エルスターは自分の妻マデリンの素行を調査してほしいと依頼。マデリンは曾祖母の亡霊にとり憑かれ、不審な行動を繰り返しているという。ジョンはマデリンの尾行を開始するが、そんな彼の見ている前でマデリンは入水自殺を図り…。

January 2020, just before the coronavirus envelops New York. Poet Gozo Yoshimasu traces the traces of his ally Jonas Mekas (1922–2019), the father of avant-garde cinema, in Manhattan and Brooklyn on the first anniversary of his death, a friendship that had continued since 1985. Wartime study notes left in the studio, a 1945 passport, personal effects arranged by his son Sebastian. In a corner of the bedroom, Yoshimasu becomes dizzy and collapses. Early in the morning of January 23rd, the anniversary of his death, a memorial poem is completed in an instant. Crossing the bridge to the office. Yoshimasu reads it aloud to the waiting Sebastian. Then, a long silence falls.
