「マルタの鷹」「黄金」「アフリカの女王」など数々の名作を残したアメリカ映画界の巨匠ジョン・ヒューストンが、1979年に手がけた長編作品。アメリカ南部文学の名作家フラナリー・オコナーの小説「賢い血」を映画化し、アメリカ南部特有の風土や精神性を鮮やかに描き出した異色のドラマ。 アメリカ陸軍を除隊した青年ヘイゼル・モーツが帰郷すると、実家には箪笥と墓標だけが残されていた。彼は見知らぬ街で「キリストのいない教会」の布教を始め、盲目の説教師やその娘、純朴な青年といった奇妙な人々と出会う。やがてヘイゼルは狂気と絶望に囚われていき……。 ヘイゼル役は「カッコーの巣の上で」でアカデミー助演男優賞にノミネートされたブラッド・ドゥーリフ。共演にエイミー・ライト、ハリー・ディーン・スタントン、ネッド・ビーティら。日本では劇場未公開だったが、2026年にジョン・ヒューストン生誕120年を記念した特集上映「生誕120年　ジョン・ヒューストン特集」で劇場初公開される。

A feature film directed in 1979 by John Huston, the master of American cinema who left behind numerous classics such as 'The Maltese Falcon,' 'The Treasure of the Sierra Madre,' and 'The African Queen.' An unconventional drama that adapts the novel 'Wise Blood' by Flannery O'Connor, a leading figure of Southern literature, vividly portraying the unique atmosphere and spirituality of the American South. When young Hazel Motes is discharged from the U.S. Army and returns home, he finds only a wardrobe and a tombstone left in his family home. In a strange city, he begins preaching the 'Church Without Christ' and encounters a motley cast of characters, including a blind preacher, his daughter, and a simple young man. Eventually, Hazel becomes consumed by madness and despair... Brad Dourif, nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest,' plays Hazel. The cast also includes Amy Wright, Harry Dean Stanton, and Ned Beatty. Although it was never theatrically released in Japan, it will have its Japanese theatrical premiere in 2026 as part of the special screening series 'John Huston 120th Anniversary' commemorating the 120th anniversary of his birth.
