Peppermint Candy

2000 · 監督: イ・チャンドン · 131分 · ドラマ

A human drama that traces twenty years in the life of a man against the backdrop of modern Korean history, winning five major awards including Best Picture at the Grand Bell Awards, South Korea's equivalent of the Oscars. This is the second feature film by director Lee Chang-dong, made in 1999, known for "Oasis" and "Secret Sunshine." Spring, 1999. Kim Yeong-ho, at the depths of despair after losing his job and family, shows up at a picnic with old friends wearing an out-of-place suit. It is the same place he visited twenty years earlier with his first love, Sunim. Standing on the railroad tracks, Yeong-ho shouts "I want to go back!" at an oncoming train, and his life begins to rewind. We see his self-destructed marriage to his wife Hong-ja, his love for Sunim that drew them together but was never fulfilled, and the Gwangju Uprising he witnessed as a soldier. Yeong-ho's journey through memory eventually arrives at the time twenty years ago when his life was most beautiful and pure. The film was released in a 4K-restored digital remaster in 2019 to coincide with the release of Lee Chang-dong's "Burning." A 4K restoration was also screened in 2023 as part of the special retrospective "Lee Chang-dong Retrospective 4K."
