La Haine
A drama set in the Paris suburbs in the 1990s, depicting one fateful day in the lives of young people filled with anger and nowhere to direct it. Then-27-year-old Mathieu Kassovitz wrote and directed, inspired by actual events. Against a backdrop of social issues such as discrimination against immigrant residents, poverty, and police violence, it vividly captures 24 hours in the lives of three young people alienated from society through striking black-and-white cinematography and tension-filled direction, winning the Best Director award at the 48th Cannes International Film Festival in 1995. It influenced not only film but also the broader culture of the time, including music and fashion, becoming a youth film representative of 1990s France. In the banlieue district on the outskirts of Paris. In a housing project where many immigrants and low-income workers live, a riot breaks out, triggered by police brutality against a young immigrant. The next morning, three young men of different origins—Vinz, Saïd, and Hubert—head out into the city still bearing the scars of the riot. As tension envelops the streets, Vinz comes into possession of a handgun lost by a police officer during the riot, and their fates hurtle in an unexpected direction. Vincent Cassel in his early career delivers a powerful presence as Vinz, and this film became his breakthrough. In October 2026, a 4K restored version will be re-released.
