「エレファント・マン」「ツイン・ピークス」などで知られる鬼才デビッド・リンチが、ニューヨークタイムズ紙に掲載された実話をもとに描いた、心温まるロードムービー。長年音信不通だった兄に会うため、トラクターに乗ってひとり旅に出る老人の姿を映し出す。 73歳のアルヴィン・ストレイトは、アメリカ・アイオワ州ローレンスで娘のローズと暮らしている。ある日、仲違いして口をきかなくなっていた76歳の兄のライルが心臓発作で倒れたとの知らせが入り、アルヴィンは兄に会いに行くことを決意する。ライルの住むウィスコンシン州マウント・ザイオンまでは560キロ。車であれば一日の距離だが、アルヴィンは運転免許を持っていない。しかし、自分の力で会いに行くと決めたアルヴィンは周囲の反対に耳も貸さず、たったひとり、時速わずか8キロのトラクターに乗り、旅に出る。 1994年のニューヨークタイムズ紙に掲載された実話の記事をもとに、リンチの当時のパートナーで、作品の編集なども手がけるメアリー・スウィーニーが脚本を執筆。主人公アルヴィンをリチャード・ファーンズワースが演じ、アカデミー賞およびゴールデングローブ賞の主演男優賞にノミネートされた。娘ローズ役はシシー・スペイセク、兄ライル役はハリー・ディーン・スタントン。1999年・第52回カンヌ国際映画祭のコンペティション部門出品。

73-year-old Alvin Straight (Richard Farnsworth) lives with his daughter Rose (Sissy Spacek) in Laurens, Iowa. One day, he suffers a fall and is forced to go to the hospital. The doctor advises him to undergo treatment and use a walker, but he refuses. Accepting only the use of two canes, he promptly returns home. He is a stubborn man. On a stormy night, news arrives that his 76-year-old brother Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton), from whom he has been long estranged, has collapsed from a heart attack. It is 560 kilometers to Mount Zion, Wisconsin, where Lyle lives. By car, it would be a day’s journey, but Alvin does not have a driver’s license. Determined to see his brother on his own terms, Alvin ignores the opposition of those around him and sets out alone on a tractor traveling at just 8 km/h.
