東映動画初のSF長篇。黒田昌郎が単独で演出した最初の長篇でもあり、デザイン性の高い画面構成やミュージカル調の作風が、寓話性を帯びた世界観を際立たせる。メタ映画的な構造を取り入れる野心的な試みもなされ、東映動画における新世代の躍進を思わせる一作となった。ラストに明かされる王女の秘密には文明批判の意図が滲むが、これは動画スタッフだった宮崎駿の発案による。

Toei Animation's first sci-fi feature. It is also the first feature-length film solely directed by Kuroda Yoshiro, whose highly designed compositions and musical style highlight the allegorical world. Ambitious meta-cinematic structures are employed, marking a breakthrough for a new generation at Toei Animation. The princess's secret revealed at the end carries a critique of civilization, an idea proposed by then-animator Hayao Miyazaki.
