At Enma's palace, where he usually manages heaven and hell, a young psychedelic demon forgets to replace the tank of the spirit laundering device that purifies souls bound for hell. Evil energy leaks from the now-full tank, and using the psychedelic demon's body as a medium, it transforms into the monster Janemba. At the same time, Enma's palace is sealed off by a barrier, throwing the order of the afterlife and the living world into chaos. In the living world, villains previously defeated, such as Frieza, are revived, causing great turmoil. Son Gohan, Son Goten, and Trunks fight back, but they are at a loss for a fundamental solution. Around the same time, during the finals of the Other World Tournament being held again as a rematch of the previous one, a mysterious crystal suddenly appears. Sensing something wrong in the Enma realm, Goku and Pikkon head to Enma's location and attempt to destroy the barrier, but fail. Enma tells them that the one who created the barrier is Janemba, who is above, and with Janemba himself calling him out, Goku takes on the fight. Janemba looks foolish at first glance, but he freely manipulates magical, bizarre techniques and is skilled at reading his opponent's movements, so Goku struggles somewhat. Finally, Goku transforms into Super Saiyan 3 for the second time since his battle with Majin Buu and lands a full-force blow on Janemba. However, Janemba, who seemed to have been killed, instantly regenerates his body and, now in a more combat-oriented form, attacks Goku. Janemba's power is too much even for Goku's Super Saiyan 3, and Goku finds himself in dire straits. Just then, Vegeta, who has regained his original body due to the disturbance in the afterlife's order, rushes to Goku's aid. Vegeta fights bravely on his own, but he cannot match Janemba, and after being shown the clear difference in power, he realizes that even in death, he still falls short of Goku, and is disheartened. Then, Goku proposes the fusion technique as a last resort. To restore the order of the afterlife and the living world, Goku and Vegeta attempt to fuse in the face of the powerful enemy Janemba.
