個人制作の短編アニメ「ほしのこえ」が劇場公開されて口コミで評判を呼び、一躍脚光を浴びたアニメーション作家・新海誠が、2007年に手がけた長編第2作。ひかれあっていた男女の時間と距離による変化を、全3話の連作形式で描いた。 互いに思いあっていた貴樹と明里は、小学校卒業と同時に明里の引越しで離ればなれになってしまう。中学生になり、明里からの手紙が届いたことをきっかけに、貴樹は明里に会いにいくことを決意する（第1話「桜花抄」）。やがて貴樹も中学の半ばで東京から引越し、遠く離れた鹿児島の離島で高校生生活を送っていた。同級生の花苗は、ほかの人とはどこか違う貴樹をずっと思い続けていたが……（第2話「コスモナウト」）。社会人になり、東京でSEとして働く貴樹。付き合った女性とも心を通わせることができず別れてしまい、やがて会社も辞めてしまう。季節がめぐり春が訪れると、貴樹は道端である女性に気づく（第3話「秒速5センチメートル」）。 主題歌には山崎まさよしの「One more time, One more chance」を起用した。

A live-action film adaptation of Makoto Shinkai's 2007 theatrical anime "5 Centimeters Per Second," directed by Shinkai of "Your Name." and "Suzume," starring Hokuto Matsumura of SixTONES. Spring 1991. Takaki Tono and Akari Shinohara, who meet at an elementary school in Tokyo, connect through their shared loneliness, but Akari moves away upon graduation. In the winter of their first year of middle school, they reunite on a snowy night in Iwafune, Tochigi, and promise beneath a cherry tree standing in the snow to meet again at the same place on March 26, 2009. Time passes to 2008. Takaki, now working as a systems engineer in Tokyo and approaching 30, realizes a part of himself remains left behind in a distant time. Akari, too, lives her quiet daily life with those memories. Mitsuki Takahata plays Akari Shinohara, the heroine who connects with Takaki; Nana Mori plays Kanae Sumita, a high school classmate who has feelings for Takaki; Yuzu Aoki plays Takaki in high school; and Asa Kimura plays Risa Mizuno, Takaki's coworker. Also starring Aoi Miyazaki and Hidetaka Yoshioka. Directed by visual artist and photographer Yoshiyuki Okuyama, who gained attention with "At the Bench," with a screenplay by Fumiko Suzuki of "Love At Least."
