On August 9, 1948, at a midwife's home in Nagasaki, Nobuko is visited by her son Koji, who she had lost three years earlier in the atomic bombing. Stunned by the impossibility, she watches as her already-dead son begins to appear frequently. Koji, who had been aiming to become a doctor, had a fiancée named Machiko with whom he had promised a future.
