'Conceal nothing, create no taboos, and share everything as much as possible.' That is the rule of the Kyobashi family, decided by Eriko as a reaction against her mother Satoko, who never did anything motherly—Eriko is determined to maintain a smiling, happy household. But contrary to Eriko's wishes, each family member harbors secrets. Her husband Takashi shuttles between two lovers, Asako and Mina; her daughter Mana refuses to go to school; and her son Ko, a shut-in with an interest in architecture, unknowingly hires Mina—his father's lover—as his tutor. One day, Eriko throws a joint birthday party for Satoko and Mina. However, thanks to a drunken Mina, the family's secrets are exposed one after another, and the home Eriko built crumbles. Yet on her own birthday, a birthday call from Satoko dissolves her resentment, and Eriko is able to be reborn, warmly welcoming her family home with gifts in hand.
