Directed by Yoshihiro Nakamura, who helmed the film adaptation of Kotaro Isaka's "A Duck and a Coin Locker," this film adapts another of Isaka's short stories of the same name. It's an ensemble drama depicting how a song that received almost no attention upon its release transcends time to save the world from extinction. In the 1970s, the ahead-of-its-time punk band "Gekirin" disbanded, leaving behind the song "FISH STORY," which was not understood by the world. Years later, in the 1980s, a timid college student who happens upon the record takes desperate action to save a woman attacked by thugs. Further in time, in the 2000s, a ferry cook aspiring to be a hero saves a high school student caught up in a sea-jacking during a school trip. And in 2012, as humanity faces extinction from a comet collision, a record shop owner also holds "FISH STORY" in his hands. Ito Atsushi and Kora Kengo play the members of the band "Gekirin," Hamada Gaku plays the timid college student, Tabe Mikako plays the high school student caught in the sea-jacking, Moriyama Mirai plays the cook, and Omori Nao plays the record shop owner. The screenplay is by Tamio Hayashi, who later worked with Nakamura on "Golden Slumber." Music production was handled by Kazuyoshi Saito. In 2026, 17 years after its 2009 release, it will be digitally re-released.
