A drama of the absurd released in 1962, in which Orson Welles—who carved his name into film history with Citizen Kane and Touch of Evil—adapted Franz Kafka's novel of the same name. It depicts a man who is informed of his arrest for a crime he has no memory of committing, drawn into an invisible trial and a labyrinth of law, rendered through a nightmarish black-and-white visual world. One morning, office worker Josef K. is declared under arrest by police officers who appear in his room without being told the reason. Without knowing what crime he is being charged with, he steps into the world of a strange and incomprehensible judicial system. Before Josef K. appear all manner of people—a court, lawyers, a nurse, a painter, a priest—but those who should help him are all somehow ambiguous, only deepening the labyrinth. Josef K. is eventually driven into a corner by an irrational world. Anthony Perkins of Psycho plays Josef K., Welles himself plays the lawyer, and Jeanne Moreau and Romy Schneider co-star. Filmed in Zagreb, Rome, and the then-unused Orsay Station in Paris, the desolate station building, gigantic offices, and disorienting spaces visualize the absurd world in which Josef K. finds himself. In September 2026, it will be re-released in a 4K restored version with digital restoration.
