宮沢賢治の童話を、「タッチ」の杉井ギサブロー監督がアニメーション映画化。登場人物を擬人化した猫に置き換えたますむらひろしの漫画を原案に、細野晴臣による幻想的な音楽にのせて描くファンタジー。病気の母と暮らし、帰らない父を待つ孤独な少年ジョバンニは、星祭りの夜に丘の上でひとり空を眺めていた。すると目の前に銀河鉄道が現れ、導かれるように列車に乗ると、そこには親友のカムパネルラがいた。2人は銀河を旅し、さまざまな人々と出会い、別れていくが、やがて旅の終わりの時が訪れ……。

A fantasy animated film adaptation of Kenji Miyazawa's children's story, directed by Gisaburo Sugii of Touch fame. Based on Hiroshi Masumura's manga, which replaces the characters with anthropomorphic cats, and set to Hosono Haruomi's fantastical music. Giovanni, a lonely boy living with his sick mother and waiting for his absent father, gazes alone at the sky from a hilltop on the night of the Star Festival. Suddenly, the Galaxy Express appears before him, and as if guided, he boards the train to find his best friend Campanella there. The two journey through the galaxy, meeting and parting with various people, until the time comes for their journey to end...
