「雲のむこう、約束の場所」「秒速5センチメートル」など、男女の心の機微を美しい風景描写とともに繊細に描き出すアニメーション作品を手がけ、国内外から注目を集める新海誠監督が、前作「言の葉の庭」から3年ぶりに送り出したオリジナル長編アニメ。「あの日見た花の名前を僕達はまだ知らない。」などで知られる田中将賀がキャラクターデザインを手がけ、「もののけ姫」「千と千尋の神隠し」などスタジオジブリ作品に数多く携わってきた安藤雅司が作画監督、主題歌を含む音楽を人気ロックバンドの「RADWIMPS」が担当した。国内興行ランキングでは公開から29週連続でトップ10入りを果たし、興行収入250億円を超える歴史的な大ヒットを記録。第40回日本アカデミー賞ではアニメーション作品として初の最優秀脚本賞を受賞した。1000年ぶりという彗星の接近が1カ月後に迫ったある日、山深い田舎町に暮らす女子高生の宮水三葉は、自分が東京の男子高校生になった夢を見る。日頃から田舎の小さな町に窮屈し、都会に憧れを抱いていた三葉は、夢の中で都会を満喫する。一方、東京で暮らす男子高校生の立花瀧も、行ったこともない山奥の町で自分が女子高生になっている夢を見ていた。心と身体が入れ替わる現象が続き、互いの存在を知った瀧と三葉だったが、やがて彼らは意外な真実を知ることになる。声の出演は瀧役に神木隆之介、三葉役に上白石萌音。その他、長澤まさみ、市原悦子らが出演。

Director Makoto Shinkai, known for delicately portraying the nuances of male-female emotions against beautiful landscapes in works like "The Place Promised in Our Early Days" and "5 Centimeters Per Second," delivers his first original feature in three years since "The Garden of Words." Character design by Masayoshi Tanaka of "Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day" fame, animation direction by Masashi Ando, known for his work on Studio Ghibli films like "Princess Mononoke" and "Spirited Away," and music including the theme song by popular rock band RADWIMPS. The film remained in the top 10 of domestic box office rankings for 29 consecutive weeks, achieving historic blockbuster success with over 25 billion yen in revenue. It won the Award for Best Screenplay at the 40th Japan Academy Prize, a first for an animated work. One month before a comet approaches for the first time in 1000 years, Mitsuha Miyamizu, a high school girl living in a mountainous rural town, dreams she is a male high school student in Tokyo. Mitsuha, who feels cramped by her small town and longs for the city, enjoys city life in her dream. Meanwhile, Taki Tachibana, a male high school student in Tokyo, dreams he is a high school girl in a mountain town he's never visited. As the body-swapping phenomenon continues and they become aware of each other, Taki and Mitsuha eventually discover an unexpected truth. Voice cast includes Ryunosuke Kamiki as Taki and Mone Kamishiraishi as Mitsuha, with Masami Nagasawa and Etsuko Ichihara among others.
