An omnibus of four short episodes by director Eric Rohmer, chronicling the curious encounters of two contrasting young women, Reinette and Mirabelle. In the first episode, "The Blue Hour," the two—who met after a flat bicycle tire—strive to experience the moment of absolute silence that occurs just before dawn. The second episode, "The Waiter," depicts their interactions with a peculiar cafe server after they begin living together in Paris. The third episode, "The Beggar, the Kleptomaniac, and the Swindler," features a series of dialogues concerning crime and conscience. The film concludes with the fourth episode, "Selling the Painting," in which they scramble to sell one of Reinette’s artworks to cover their rent. Rohmer conceived the project based on the personal anecdotes of Joëlle Miquel, who plays Reinette, and filmed it on 16mm with a minimal crew.
