太平洋戦争末期の沖縄戦に看護要員として動員された「ひめゆり学徒隊」の悲劇を描いた戦争ドラマ。舛田利雄監督が吉永小百合と浜田光夫の日活黄金コンビを迎え、石野径一郎の同名小説を映画化した。昭和18年。まだ戦争の影の薄い沖縄で級友たちと運動会を楽しんでいた沖縄師範女子部の与那嶺和子は、師範男子の西里順一郎と出会う。翌19年になると戦局は悪化。ついに沖縄も戦場になろうとする中、陣地構築の作業に従事するようになった和子と順一郎は、互いに愛情を抱き始める。やがてサイパン島が陥落。小学校教員である和子の母ハツは、内地への疎開が決まった学童たちに同行するため輸送船に乗るが、船を撃沈され帰らぬ人となってしまう。10月、ついに空襲が始まる。全島に非常戦時体制が敷かれ、女子学生は臨時看護師として南風原陸軍病院へ、男子学生は鉄血勤皇隊として陸軍と行動を共にすることになる。

A war drama depicting the tragedy of the 'Himeyuri Student Corps,' mobilized as nursing staff during the Battle of Okinawa at the end of the Pacific War. Director Toshio Masuda brings together Nikkatsu's golden couple Sayuri Yoshinaga and Mitsuo Hamada to adapt Keiichiro Ishino's novel of the same name. In 1943, in Okinawa, still untouched by the shadow of war, Yonamine Kazuko, a student at the Okinawa Normal School for Girls, enjoys a sports day with her classmates and meets Nishizato Junichiro, a student from the men's normal school. By 1944, the war situation worsens. As Okinawa itself is about to become a battlefield, Kazuko and Junichiro, now engaged in building fortifications, begin to develop feelings for each other. Soon, Saipan falls. Kazuko's mother Hatsu, an elementary school teacher, boards a transport ship to accompany the schoolchildren who have been ordered to evacuate to the mainland, but the ship is sunk and she never returns. In October, the air raids finally begin. A state of total emergency is declared across the island. Female students are sent to the Haebaru Army Hospital as temporary nurses, while male students join the army as part of the Blood and Iron Student Corps.
