1984年、中英共同声明の調印により、香港の将来は不透明さを増していた。その年、沙田（シャーティン）の公営団地で育った少年たちを中心に、香港初の華人青少年野球チーム「沙燕（サーイン）隊」が結成される。野球の経験もなく、満足な用具もない彼らは、新聞紙を丸めたボールで練習を始め、最初の試合では台湾の小学生チーム相手に大差で惨敗する。 沙燕隊の中心となるのは、内向的で不器用な謝志龍（ロン）と、衝動的だが義理堅い范進威（ワイ）。兄弟同然に育った二人は、厳格ながら生徒思いの盧（ロー）校長に導かれ、仲間たちとともに厳しい練習に打ち込む。しかし「勝つときも負けるときも一緒」という誓いとは裏腹に、ワイはある出来事をきっかけにチームを去り、ロンは野球に向き合い続ける道を選ぶ。 仲間との日々、失われゆく友情、重なる敗北──。香港の歩みと呼応するように、彼らはそれぞれの場所で自分の時間を刻み、やがて運命の試合の日がやって来る。宿敵・日本バッファローズとの一戦は、彼ら自身の「これまで」と「これから」を問い直す舞台となる──。

In 1984, Hong Kong before the handover to China. In the suburban new town of Sha Tin, the first youth baseball team in Hong Kong, the 'Sha Yan' team, is formed. In Hong Kong, where baseball is not a major sport, a group of underachieving boys with no baseball experience begin practicing with balls made of rolled-up newspapers, but in their first game, they suffer a crushing defeat against a Taiwanese elementary school team. Nevertheless, guided by their strict yet caring principal Law (played by Liu Kai-chi), the team members gradually grow, centered on the childhood friends—the introverted Lung (played by Lam Yiu-sing) and the impulsive but loyal Wai (played by Tony Wu). The final showdown against their arch-rivals, the Japan Buffaloes, becomes a stage for them to re-examine their 'past' and 'future'—a youth drama based on a true story, set in early 1980s Hong Kong, leaving a quiet resonance that is not reduced to the outcome of the sport.
