演技経験のない4人の女性を主演に、ごく普通の30代後半の女性たちが抱える不安や悩みを、総時間317分の緊迫感あふれるドラマとして描いた。映画学校の生徒たちを起用した4時間を超える大作「親密さ」や、東北記録映画3部作（「なみのおと」「なみのこえ」「うたうひと」）など挑戦的な作品作りを続ける濱口竜介監督が手がけ、スイスの第68回ロカルノ国際映画祭で、主演4人が最優秀女優賞を受賞した。30代も後半を迎えた、あかり、桜子、芙美、純の4人は、なんでも話せる親友同士だと思っていた。しかし、純が1年にわたる離婚協議を隠していたことが発覚。そのことで動揺した4人は、つかの間の慰めにと有馬温泉へ旅行にでかけ、楽しい時間を過ごすが……。
