太平洋戦争直前、昭和初期の日本を舞台に、ロシア人のスパイ、リヒャルト・ゾルゲの姿を通して、激動する時代を描いた歴史サスペンス大作。「梟の城」「写楽」の巨匠・篠田正浩監督が手がけ、今作が引退作となった。ゾルゲ役は「トゥームレイダー」などハリウッドでも活躍するイギリスの俳優イアン・グレン。共演に「シコふんじゃった。」の本木雅弘ら。1930年代、朝日新聞社の記者・尾崎秀実は、赴任先の上海でドイツの新聞記者というリヒャルト・ゾルゲと出会う。やがて日本のドイツ大使館に出入りするようになったゾルゲだったが、その正体はソ連が送りだした諜報員だった。日本で再会した尾崎らを協力者にしたゾルゲは、日本とドイツ両国の情報をモスクワに送り続けていたが……。

The final film by master director Masahiro Shinoda. It chronicles the bond and conflict between Richard Sorge, a German who posed as a Nazi journalist while secretly working as a communist spy funneling Japanese-German secrets to the Soviet Union, and Hotsumi Ozaki, an Asahi Shimbun reporter who resonated with Sorge and became his collaborator. Iain Glen from "Tomb Raider" plays Sorge with a light, charming touch, alongside a stellar cast including Masahiro Motoki, Kiichi Nakai, Koyuki, and Shinoda's partner in both public and private life, Shima Iwashita. The art direction recreating early Showa-era Shanghai and Japan is also a highlight. In the 1930s, as the world moved toward war, Asahi Shimbun reporter Ozaki, assigned to the Shanghai branch, meets Sorge, a journalist who is a Nazi Party member. But Sorge's true identity is that of a Soviet intelligence agent. Eventually, Sorge comes to Japan as a German correspondent and conducts espionage from the German Embassy. Meanwhile, Ozaki, who had returned to Japan, reunites with Sorge. Ozaki, who harbored doubts about Japan's current state, feels a kinship with the ideals Sorge speaks of and decides to cooperate with him, but......
