Robot Carnival
Produced during the mid-1980s when original video animation was booming, this omnibus work pushes forward the director's individuality. Katsuhiro Otomo handles the opening and ending, packing the essence of his animation into a short time. The English title logo features a building drawn in meticulous detail so its structure is discernible. The composition of it running as a machine, and the imagery of a toy-box-like, amusement-park-like interior collapsing carefully step by step, truly feels like a microcosm of 'Steamboy'. While other directors develop unique worlds around the theme of 'robots', Otomo creates a short film that is more relaxed and visually driven.
