イギリスの女性監督ロビーナ・ローズが1981年に手がけた唯一の長編監督作。 ロンドンのノッティングヒルにあるポートベロー・ホテル。夜勤の受付係の女性はルーティンワークをこなしながら、風変わりな宿泊客たちを静かに見つめている。ライブを終えたバンドマンたち、落ちぶれた伯爵夫人、夜通しポーカーに興じる男たち。まるで幻燈のような光景が映し出され、ホテルは睡眠と覚醒の間で境界的な空間と化していく。 主演はイギリスのパンクカルチャーのアイコン的存在で、デレク・ジャーマン監督作「ジュビリー」に出演するなど俳優としても活動したジョーダン（パメラ・ルーク）。アメリカのインディペンデント映画作家ジョン・ジョストが撮影を手がけ、伝説的楽団「ペンギン・カフェ・オーケストラ」のサイモン・ジェフスが音楽を担当。そのほかにも1980年代初頭のロンドンのアート＆カウンターカルチャーに関わる人々が参加し、独自の世界観を作り上げた。長年にわたり鑑賞困難な状況にあったが、2024年に4K修復が行われ、日本では2026年8月に劇場初公開。

The only feature film directed by British female director Robina Rose, made in 1981. At the Portobello Hotel in Notting Hill, London, a female night receptionist goes about her routine work while quietly observing the eccentric guests. Musicians after a gig, a down-and-out countess, men playing poker all night. Scenes unfold like a magic lantern show, transforming the hotel into a liminal space between sleep and wakefulness. Starring Jordan (Pamela Rooke), an iconic figure of British punk culture who also acted in Derek Jarman's 'Jubilee.' The cinematography was handled by American independent filmmaker John Jost, and the music was composed by Simon Jeffes of the legendary Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Others involved in London's early 1980s art and counterculture scene participated, creating a unique world. The film was difficult to see for many years, but a 4K restoration was completed in 2024, and it is scheduled for its first theatrical release in Japan in August 2026.
