At a department store in the French resort of Riviera, American businessman Michael Brandon (Gary Cooper) insists on buying only the top half of a pair of pajamas. Conveniently appearing to take just the bottoms is Nicole (Claudette Colbert), the daughter of a poor aristocrat. Instantly smitten by her spirited nature, Brandon pursues her relentlessly and secures an engagement. However, on their wedding day, Nicole discovers Brandon has been married seven times and flies into a rage. They manage to marry only on the condition that Brandon pays Nicole a huge alimony if they divorce. Naturally, the relationship fails, and frustrated by his wife's indifference, Brandon resorts to a desperate measure.
