An anti-war film adapted from Shōhei Ōoka's novel of the same name, scripted by Kazuo Wada and directed by Kon Ichikawa. Abandoned by both the hospital and his unit, Tamura wanders the island of Leyte on the Philippine front. He reunites with fellow retreating soldiers in front of a hospital, but when the hospital comes under shelling, Tamura flees alone. With no food and having lost his comrades, Tamura survives by eating grass. Eventually he reunites with his former comrades Nagamatsu and Yasuda, who had been separated from him. The two call the soldiers they killed 'monkeys' and have been eating their flesh...
