草創期のTVアニメは受注が不安定だったことから、劇場用を安定受注するため企画された中篇映画「B作」の1作目（従来の長篇は「A作」と呼ばれる）。石ノ森章太郎（当時・石森章太郎）の人気SFマンガを原作にとり、作画監督に「レインボー戦隊ロビン」の木村圭市郎ほかTVアニメのスタッフを起用、TVの省力化技法も使われた。仲間の1人を子供の姿にするなど原作からの変更もあるが、戦いは陸、海、空へと展開して娯楽性は高く、スコープサイズを意識した画作りも見られる。

During the early days of TV anime, orders were unstable, so to secure steady theatrical commissions, a medium-length film series called "B Works" was planned (conventional feature-length films were called "A Works"). Based on Shotaro Ishinomori's popular sci-fi manga, the film employed TV anime staff such as Keiichiro Kimura, the animation director of "Rainbow Sentai Robin," and utilized TV production efficiency techniques. While there were changes from the original manga, such as turning one of the characters into a child, the battles unfold across land, sea, and air, offering high entertainment value, and the composition shows awareness of widescreen framing.
