Long ago in Japan. A boy named Kubo, who lost his left eye, lives with his ailing mother. Playing a magical shamisen inherited from his mother, he earns a living by telling the story of a samurai named Hanzo in the village. On the night of the Bon festival, two 'Sisters of the Dark' who claim to be his mother's sisters appear and attack Kubo, but his mother tells him to gather his father's 'sword, armor, and helmet' and magically sends Kubo far away. Beginning his journey, Kubo makes allies of a female monkey and a male stag beetle while searching for the 'sword, armor, and helmet'.
