「人間の條件」「切腹」の小林正樹監督が、小泉八雲の「怪談」に収録された4編をオムニバス形式で映像化し、1965年・第18回カンヌ国際映画祭で審査員特別賞を受賞した作品。生活苦から妻を捨て良家の娘と再婚した武士が思わぬ形で元妻と再会する「黒髪」、吹雪の中で雪女に遭遇した男の運命を描く「雪女」、平家物語を弾き語る盲目の琵琶法師・芳一が平家の怨霊に取り憑かれる「耳無芳一の話」、茶碗の中に映った見知らぬ男の顔をそのまま飲み干した男の末路を描く「茶碗の中」の4話で構成。キャストには三國連太郎、仲代達矢、岸惠子ら豪華俳優陣が集結。カンヌ国際映画祭では161分の短縮版が上映された。

Taking its title from an archaic Japanese word meaning "ghost story," this anthology adapts four folk tales. A penniless samurai marries for money with tragic results. A man stranded in a blizzard is saved by Yuki the Snow Maiden, but his rescue comes at a cost. Blind musician Hoichi is forced to perform for an audience of ghosts. An author relates the story of a samurai who sees another warrior's reflection in his teacup.
