チャールズ・チャップリンが監督・脚本・製作・作曲・主演を務め、機械文明と資本主義社会を痛烈に風刺した名作喜劇。 大きな工場で働くチャーリーは、毎日同じ機械を使って単調な仕事を続けていたせいで錯乱し、病院へ送られる。ようやく退院したものの、今度はデモ隊のリーダーと間違われて投獄されてしまう。やがて無罪が判明し自由の身となった彼は造船場で働き始めるがすぐに解雇され、刑務所へ戻る方法はないかと考えるように。やがて無銭飲食をして捕まったチャーリーは、護送車の中でパン泥棒の少女と知り合う。 ヒロイン役に、チャップリンの当時のパートナーだったポーレット・ゴダード。チャップリンが映画の中で初めて肉声を発し、自身の作曲による「ティティナ」で歌声を披露。ラストシーンで流れる名曲「スマイル」も印象を残した。

A classic comedy masterpiece by Charles Chaplin, who directed, wrote, produced, composed the music for, and starred in it, offering a scathing satire of industrial civilization and capitalist society. Charlie, working in a large factory, goes mad from performing monotonous tasks with the same machine every day and is sent to a hospital. After being discharged, he is mistaken for the leader of a protest march and imprisoned. When proven innocent and freed, he starts working at a shipyard but is quickly fired, leading him to consider ways to return to prison. Eventually, he is arrested for eating without paying and meets a young girl who stole bread in the police van. The heroine is played by Paulette Goddard, Chaplin's partner at the time. This was the first film in which Chaplin spoke on screen and sang his own composition, "Titina." The famous song "Smile" played during the final scene also leaves a lasting impression.
