The third volume of a monumental six-part documentary series totaling 10 hours and 46 minutes, capturing the legendary actor Kataoka Nizaemon XIII—who sustained the Kabuki world from the late Showa to early Heisei eras—between the ages of 84 and 90. This is the middle installment of the "Man and Art" section, which turns the camera toward Nizaemon’s artistic discourse, stage performances, and personal life over a four-year period from age 84 to 88. The film features his 1988 performances at Tokyo’s Kabuki-za, including the "Gakumonjo" and "Domyoji" scenes from *Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami* and the "Hanawatashi" scene from *Imoseyama Onna Teikin*. It further captures a "Gathering to Hear Artistic Talks" with his patrons; rehearsal footage for his role as Okina in *Kotobuki Shiki Sanbaso* for the opening of Omiya Sonic City; a gathering of supporters in Matsumoto, Nagano; reflections on a short story he wrote at age 23; his passion for trains; a scene of him plucking a shamisen at a Gion teahouse; and the Kataoka family’s Obon traditions. The film is directed by Sumiko Haneda, a documentary filmmaker renowned for works such as *Akiko: Portrait of a Dancer*. Due to its immense length, theatrical screenings have been rare, and because it has never been released on home video or streaming platforms, the film has long been difficult to view. However, in 2026, to commemorate the 33rd anniversary of Kataoka Nizaemon XIII’s passing and the centenary of director Sumiko Haneda’s birth, all six volumes will receive their first Japanese theatrical screening in 17 years.
